Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500X is here; know everything about it

Royal Enfield motorcycles are synonymous with vintage styling, exhilarating horsepower and thumping engine sounds. This is how it is and has been popular for so many years. The year 2017 proved to be an exciting year for the Royal Enfield with the sales number clocking record figures and many new products were unveiled at the EICMA 2017. The company is determined to carry this momentum this year too. It is set to include a new variant to its popular line-up of Thunderbird motorcycles, which has been named as the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500X.

The Royal Enfield Thunderbird ranges cruiser style motorcycles come with the company’s Classic design and equip high-performance engine as well. Currently, the Thunderbird series bikes come in two variants - Thunderbird 350 and Thunderbird 500. Now, with the new variant of 500X coming, it has already created a lot of buzz among the cruiser enthusiast.



The Thunderbird 500X is coming soon and is expected to be launched before the 2018 Auto Expo in February. The new cruiser bike with some new features, different paint scheme along with the vital cosmetic changes over the standard model is set to be an exciting package in all. It has already been spotted at some dealerships in India, which clearly indicates that the model is due for a launch.

Styling and features

The all-new Thunderbird 500X can be termed as an updated or a modernised version of the Thunderbird 500. It is a classically styled cruiser with brighter colour options, which makes it quite attractive from the outset. It will be offered in four new exciting colours – electric blue, white, candy red and yellow. Moreover, the engine and other cycle parts come in the all-black finish, instead of the silver finish. The riding stance of the bike has improved over the sibling to offer a comfortable riding experience. The split-seat has been replaced by a single long seat and it misses out on the pillion backrest.

Up front, the motorcycle retains the projector headlight, LED daytime running lights and twin-pod instrument console from the standard bike. Other noticeable changes include alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, which has been used for the first time from the manufacturer in its bike. The bike will run on the 19-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel.


The power mechanism

The India-bound Thunderbird 500X is set to be powered by the same BS IV compliant engine, as of its sibling, Thunderbird 500. Under the skin, the bike receives a 499cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that is good enough to develop a maximum power output of 27.20 bhp at 5,250 revolutions per minute against a peak torque of 41.3 Nm at 4,000 revolutions per minute. The produced power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the five-speed manual gearbox.
Powered by the same engine mechanism, the cruiser motorcycle is most likely to return a mileage of 20-25 kmpl. The claimed top speed of the bike is around 130 kmph, which is at par to take on most of its rivals.

Suspension and braking

The Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500X will feature the same suspension and braking system, as of the Thunderbird 500 variant. In terms of suspension, the cruiser features the same 41mm telescopic forks at the front and five-speed adjustable twin gas charged suspension unit at the rear. The suspension system provides optimum stability to the ride on bumpy tracks by absorbing most of the shocks. Coming to the braking system, the bike gets 280mm and 240mm disc brakes on the front and rear wheel respectively.

The all-new Thunderbird 500X is going to be a riding sensation among the cruiser lovers and is expected to be priced slightly higher than the regular model by Rs. 5,000, starting at Rs. 1.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
